Bricks Intended For Building Wine Cellar Leaves Builder Speechless When It Cracked Open
I’m sure you’ll agree that people renovate their houses for various reasons. Having said that, there’s one main reason people renovate their house – to prolong the life of their house. If they want their house to continue to stand strong for years to come, renovation could help. Then again there are people who want to upgrade their house a little and change things up a bit. While sometimes a fresh coat of paint does the job, other times, constructing new additions with bricks are required. Whatever the reason may be, house renovation is not a thing of the past, and will likely never be. People who are into construction know that all projects come with their own set of surprises, but no one was prepared for this.
A Canadian Imgur user was going to spend his entire summer working with his boss to build a wine cellar for a client based in Vancouver. In the process of building the cellar, the men realized that they were going to work with local sandstone and reclaimed brick. Why though? Why not use new bricks with modern construction techniques? Well apparently, the client had requested that the cellar they build should have an old-fashioned feel, nothing modern. Therefore, the duo decided to use reclaimed bricks, but neither of them had any idea that an old brick was about to surprise them.
Some reclaimed bricks had a stamp on them and others had strange symbols carved on them. Instead of ignoring those symbols, our Canadian guy decided to try and decode them. He claimed that although he had worked with many reclaimed bricks in the past, he’d never seen ones with similar marks and symbols etched on them. According to him, there was definitely something important about the reclaimed bricks they were working with, but what was it that made them different? Certain bricks have marks imprinted on them to make it easier for builders to know the company responsible for making them.
These marks also help builders know where and when the bricks were made. Our Canadian guy couldn’t ignore the strange symbols on his reclaimed bricks so he decided to consult several valuable resources available for brick fans. After thorough research, he found out that some of the bricks he was working with were made in Illinois by Illinois Brick Company, an establishment that was formed in April 1900 and shut down in 1938, when aerial mapping of the region began. Let’s not forget that these bricks were in Vancouver, over 3,576 km away from Illinois! So how did they get there in the first place? Before he could begin solving that mystery, something else happened.
One day, while trying to reach for a brick, it accidentally fell down and cracked open, revealing it’s deeply buried secret – a mysterious key! While the man’s not sure who the key belongs to or which door it once opened, he assumes that it could be a worker’s house key or, perhaps, a clue to a hidden treasure! While it’s unlikely that the key was intentionally placed in the brick, you can’t deny that it definitely is an incredible find! Now we’re not sure if the Canadian man intends to go treasure hunting, but we sure do hope that he’ll keep us posted!
