Doctors Were Asked To Pull Plug On Unresponsible Wife By A Man, Then He Hears Her Utter Three Words
“Till death do us part” wasn’t just a phrase for the Finley family from Oklahoma. Ryan and Jill Finley got married in 2003, and just four years after marriage, tragedy struck that left Ryan with an impossible decision to make and they had to see doctors. The Finley family loved to enjoy weekends in their own special ways – while Ryan enjoyed sitting on the porch with a hot cup of coffee, Jill loved sleeping in and relaxing as much as she could. Usually, Ryan would let Jill sleep in for as long as she wanted, but one Sunday morning in 2007, he decided to wake her up earlier than usual so they could enjoy the lovely summer morning together. Little did he know what he was about to see would freeze him in his tracks.
As soon as he entered their bedroom and tried waking Jill up, he realized that she wasn’t breathing. He immediately called 911 and when medics arrived they quickly used a defibrillator on Jill in an attempt to revive her while a panicked Ryan watched in horror. When the medics were unable to get a heartbeat, they prepared to transport her to the Oklahoma Heart Hospital, where she was rushed to the emergency room and put on a respirator. For now, Jill was safe as her brain was receiving the oxygen it required, but she wasn’t free from danger just yet. According to the doctors, Jill had suffered a silent heart attack while she was fast asleep.
Not only that, doctors suspected that Jill’s brain was oxygen-deprived for almost five long minutes. As stated in SpinalCord.com brain injuries from oxygen deprivation starts at the one-minute mark where brain cells begin dying. At the three-minute mark, neurons suffer increased significant damage, at the five-minute mark, death becomes inevitable. At 10 minutes, a coma and lasting brain damage become imminent and at the 15-minute mark, survival becomes exceedingly impossible. Doctors wrapped Jill in a cooling pad to avoid further brain damage, but that didn’t help revive her, in fact, doctors could see that her brain wasn’t showing much activity.
Soon after, Jill fell into a coma and remained in a vegetative state for 14 days. Ryan refused to move by her side – he read Bible verses out loud for her to hear and penned down his thoughts to her in a notebook. Ryan knew that her chances of survival were slim, but he refused to give up. Doctors too provided little hope to Ryan whenever he spoke to them about Jill’s health. In fact, they told him that her chances of survival were about one percent because she wasn’t showing any signs of progress. After two weeks, doctors asked Ryan to make an impossible and heartbreaking decision – to take Jill off life support.
Ryan immediately called Jill’s parents and requested them to help him decide their next steps. However, neither Ryan nor Jill had an official plan in place to decide what needed to be done if one of them was on life support. But from past experience, Ryan believed that Jill would never want to be kept alive in a vegetative state and so after speaking to her parents, Ryan made a difficult decision – to take Jill off life support. Doctors told Ryan that they could say goodbye to Jill for she would remain alive for a short period of time after being taken off life support. But a miracle happened.
Soon after being taken off life support, Jill’s body began showing signs of life and just a few minutes later she opened her eyes and said, “Get me out of here.” According to doctors, Jill had a congenital condition that stopped her heart from pumping blood. With a pacemaker in place, Jill worked with different therapists to relearn some basic tasks, made full recovery and developed a new sense of love and appreciation for Ryan and her life!
