Sheepshead Fish With Human Teeth Is Spotted And The Entire World’s Losing Its Mind
There are so many different kinds of fish such as Sheepshead Fish in the world, in fact, according to Wikipedia, there are nearly 28,000 different species of fish swimming in our waters. Some are boneless, others are naturally electric-powered, some have giant fins, others glow in the dark, some have sharp spines, others look like clowns, but I bet none of them have human teeth, except for one. Meet the sheepshead scientifically known as Archosargus probatocephalus.

Belonging to the Sparidae family, unlike the rest of its family, the sheepshead does not change its sex nor does it make you trip when you eat one. If you didn’t know, one of its close relatives called the Salema porgy is popularly known as the dreamfish, and for a good reason. In 2002 a 90-year-old man ate a Salema porgy and for three straight nights, he hallucinated about people and birds screaming their lungs out! The poor man who thought he was losing his mind started hallucinating two hours after he consumed the fish.

Then a 40-year-old man unknowingly ate the Salema porgy while vacationing in French Riviera when suddenly he started hallucinating about screaming animals, giants and massive spiders walking around his car! Now that you know what the Sparidae family can do, you’d be relieved to know that the sheepshead won’t make you hallucinate, and the best part? They’re very tasty! But here’s the catch – they have human teeth. Weighing over 9 kg, an adult sheepshead can grow up to 91 cm in length, and they’re known for stealing the bait.

Someone from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, who spotted the fish, initially thought it had human dentures stuck in its mouth. If you think the fish uses its pearly whites to smile broadly, think again. They’re so strong that one bite is enough to break metal fishhooks in half. If it can snap metal fishhooks in half, sea creatures like oysters, crabs, and barnacles are like a toothpick to the sheepshead. Because of their massive size, the sheepshead is among the most wanted fish in Florida, United States. In fact, in New York, a section of Brooklyn is named after the fish called the Sheepshead Bay.

So why is the sheepshead called the sheepshead? Well, one theory is that because its teeth look like sheep’s teeth. The sheepshead’s maximum lifespan is a whopping 20 years and they mature at the age of two. This means, by the age of two, the sheepshead has the power to put up a tough fight at the end of your line!
