Fur Trade Lands Sable At The Edge Of A Sword, But Woman Steps In To Rescue Her
Fur – three tiny words that land many, many animals down to slaughter-land. But have you ever wondered why people buy it? Some people think that wearing fur and leather is practical because it lasts long and stays warm for many years. These people believe that being the animal kingdom’s apex mammal, it is a human’s right to use the animal’s coat. According to HuffPost, people buy fur because it is regarded as a symbol of power – power over animals and nature. Fashion has also played its part in encouraging more and more people to wear fur.
There are many different kinds of fur, but according to Investopedia, mink, sable, and chinchilla are the most expensive ranging anywhere from $1,000 to a whopping $150,000 per item. Since this article is about a poor sable at the edge of a sword, here’s a shocking fact – one sable coat is made from the fur of 40 sables. That’s 40 sables slaughtered to make one coat that can easily sell for $150,000 or more. For example, in 2015, Karl Lagerfeld’s real sable fur coat had a price tag of a massive $1,113,985.
Coming back to our article, meet Umora, an adorable sable living in a farm in Russia, ready to be slaughtered so her thick, shiny coat can become someone’s fashion accessory. The poor sable, who had no idea that her life was about to be cut short, was rescued in the nick of time by a kindhearted woman called Zhenya, who came across her picture online. Before we proceed, here’s a shocking fact – Russia is the world’s second-largest fur market where fur is a wardrobe staple.
According to Russian Fur Union, in 2017 fur coats worth $2.3 billion were sold in Russia’s legal and black market. Here’s another fact – according to a BBC documentary titled “This World: Inside the Billionaire’s Wardrobe,” some even go as far as buying bedspreads and underwear made from pure sable fur. Yes, we’re speechless too. Back to our article then, shall we? It wasn’t long before Zhenya decided to purchase Umora from the Russian farm in order to save her from being slaughtered. Despite being a wild animal, Umora, who was captive her entire life, was not equipped for a life in the wild.
Zhenya then decided to keep Umora as her pet but discourages everyone from keeping wild animals as pets. It’s important to understand that the only reason Zhenya decided to keep Umora as a pet was because the poor sable didn’t know what it was like to live as a wild animal in the wild. Living with Umora hasn’t been easy for Zhenya, but she’s doing everything she can to keep her pet happy. Being a wild animal at heart, Umora can be extremely anxious at times because of her traumatic experiences at the fur farm, but Zhenya treats her with love and patience and the two are now inseparable!
While we’re happy that Umora was rescued from the blades, unfortunately, there are many like Umora who end up as luxury status items.
