33 Weeks Pregnant Wife Gives Birth Then Suffers A Stroke That Wipes Out All Her Memories
Remember the movie called “The Vow” that was released in 2012? If you’re not familiar with it, here’s a synopsis. It’s a story about how a recently-married couple was torn apart when the wife, who falls into a coma after a car accident, wakes up with a complete memory loss. It’s a movie about how the husband tries everything he can to win her love back. It won’t come as a surprise to you, but this movie was based on a true-life story of Kim and Krickitt Carpenter, who’s strong faith in God had them believe that the Lord has the power to heal marriages during difficult times.
Meet 38-years-old Steve Curto and his 35-years-old wife Camre Curto, both head over heels in love with each other. Life was literally a bed of roses for the young couple who were anxiously awaiting their bundle of joy – yes, Camre was pregnant with their first child. During pregnancy, Camre’s first and second trimester was full of joy and excitement, everything looked perfect, she and her baby were healthy. What could possibly go wrong? After all, the couple had to wait only three more months before they could hold their baby and walk into parenthood.
Well, everything was too good to be true because the last three months literally threatened to destroy their happiness and tear them apart. Before Camre was 33 weeks pregnant she began experiencing extremely violent vomiting sessions and at the 33-week mark, her throat began swelling, making it nearly impossible for her to breathe. A panicked Steve quickly rushed Camre to the hospital where she went into a grand mal seizure. Because she was in a critical condition, doctors performed an emergency c-section and delivered their baby boy, Gavin, who weighed a little over four pounds. As for Camre, she was far from out of harm’s way.
Not only did she have a seizure, she also suffered a stroke that affected both sides of her brain, eventually wiping out all her short and longterm memories – leaving her as blank as an empty canvas. Doctors revealed that Camre had undiagnosed preeclampsia during her pregnancy that was left untreated, causing her to develop the life-threatening eclampsia during her last trimester. Naturally, Steve was heartbroken. Camre didn’t know who he was, who she was or that she had just given birth to the baby they were anxiously waiting for just a few months prior to the incident.
While Camre was busy recovering and relearning basic tasks, Steve was bonding with their son, giving Gavin all the attention and care he required to become healthy. Although Steve often doubted if their marriage could survive the trauma, he was determined to win his wife’s love, after all, they spent 10 wonderful years together. Then one day when Steve and Camre were talking to each other on the couch, she said, “I don’t know who you are, but I know I love you.” Her powerful words quickly became Steve’s positive affirmation. As time went by Camre learned how to be a mom to Gavin and eventually gained back her personality.
Unfortunately, Camre suffered from epilepsy and had frequent episodes of seizures. To complicate their lives even further, the medications that help control her seizures would affect her ability to regain her memories. It was in 2017 that a frustrated Camre realized she would never be able to recover all her precious memories. Steve, on the other hand, was determined to bring back a smile on his beautiful wife’s face – he wanted her to know what their lives were like together. Yes, she couldn’t remember, but he could so he wrote a book titled “But I Know I Love You” and published it in 2019, just in time for the couple’s fourth wedding anniversary.
The book, which is dedicated to his wife Camre, details their entire love story – from the time when they met to the birth of their son Gavin.
