These high school sweethearts’ story is going to blow your mind. There was a time in my life when I refused to believe in the power of true love. Don’t all love stories end in heartbreaks and trauma? Not until I saw true love unfold before my very eyes; my grandparents. Although I’ve seen my grandparents holding hands as they walked the tight-rope of life, I’ve also seen them tiptoe around each other. They were very much in love, but also cautious around each other. When I read this story, it reminded me of the love my grandparents had for each other.
Meet high school sweethearts Bob Harvey and Annette Adkins. Their love story began in Virginia in 1955 when they were both high school juniors. When Harvey saw Adkins for the first time, he instantly fell head over heels in love with her. He just knew she was his soulmate – the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen in his life. Adkins was over the moon when Harvey accompanied her to prom, but neither of them knew that life had other plans for them.
As most young relationships go, after high school, the two lost connection and were soon married to other people where they had families of their own. Harvey continued to think about Adkins despite his long marriage, but it wasn’t until 2017 when he actually reached out to her. When Harvey’s wife passed away in 2017, he searched for Adkins via Google search and soon found out that she too had lost her husband. To reconnect with her, he sent her a card with his phone number and it wasn’t long then that the two began talking to each other again.
Harvey knew that this was the woman he wanted to live his life with and so, without wasting time, he drove 500 miles to Ohio in his red Ford Flex to visit Adkins. As soon as Adkins opened the door, Harvey’s heart skipped a beat as he handed her some flowers. Before Adkins could say a word, Harvey cupped her face and poured out his heart to her. He told Adkins how he felt about her before telling her that he loved her and wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. To Harvey, Adkins was still the most beautiful woman on the planet.
On the 19th of October 2019, Harvey and Adkins, both 80, officially got married at the Central College Presbyterian Church in Westerville. Since nothing about their love story is traditional, neither was their wedding. Instead of wearing a traditional white wedding dress, Adkins was comfortable wearing burgundy slacks with a matching sweater whereas Harvey was seen wearing a white coat and a pink carnation flower clipped to it. While Adkins was overwhelmed with the entire experience, Harvey was over the moon!
The young couple planned to celebrate their marriage by going on a trip to Maumee Bay in Oregon, Ohio. We’re not sure what they’re up to now, but we know wherever they are, they’re happy as long as they’re together!
