Researchers Filming Ocean Seabed Terrified To See Wreckfish Swallow A Whole Shark
Isn’t it easy to believe that we know almost everything there is to know about Earth? Blame the fast-paced world we live in today – there’s literally not much time left! Expert researchers are busy telescoping space, conquering mountain peaks and exploring isolated jungles when literally 70% of the world’s waters are hiding secrets itching to be discovered. It was because of global warming that scientists began understanding the importance of studying ocean beds and how they influence climate change. Therefore, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have made it their ambition to understand the dynamics of our planet and often share their findings with the public. A two-stage ocean expedition was launched on the 30th of May 2019 that lasted 44 days.
Stage one was to locate areas on ocean beds that allowed seepage of methane and to identify new species of sponge and coral while stage two was to locate long-lost relics that lay scattered underwater. Once stage one was complete while working onboard Okeanos Explorer, experts began preparing for the much-awaited stage from the 20th of June. Using a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), they dove 650 feet underwater to see if they could discover some evidence of the wrecked American oil tanker SS Bloody Marsh that sunk in the Atlantic Ocean during World War II. While the team couldn’t find the remains of the tanker, they saw something so sinister that it would forever be etched in their memories.
In the live footage from the ROV, expert researchers could see a herd of sharks feasting hungrily on a swordfish carcass. The experts identified two different shark species of the Squalidae family feeding on the carcass – the roughskin dogfish and the recently discovered Genie’s dogfish, all unaware of the danger lurking in the shadows. That’s when experts noticed a shadow emerge from the dark – it was a giant wreckfish. Naturally, everyone thought that like the sharks, the wreckfish was there to claim its share of the swordfish carcass, but they were wrong. Growing up to 6.5 feet in length and weighing a maximum of 220 pounds, the wreckfish was about to show everyone the damage it’s powerful jaws could make.
The wreckfish slowly approached the sharks, who were busy feeding on the carcass, completely unaware of their surroundings. And before anyone could guess what was about to happen, it quickly snagged a dogfish in its mighty jaws, leaving experts utterly shocked. The wreckfish wasn’t interested in eating a lifeless swordfish – it wanted fresh food. The crew watching the live footage could see the dogfish’s tail inside the predator’s jaw wriggling hopelessly, probably trying to break free and swim back to safety, but in vain. The experts quickly uploaded the footage on YouTube which went viral almost instantly! Yes, this is the first time people had seen a wreckfish literally swallow an entire shark!
